The county provides fantastic opportunities for both downhill and cross-country skiing, in the mountains, inland and on the coast.
Downhill skiers and snowboarders have a comprehensive choice, from urban slopes to classic ski resorts.in the mountains. Tärnaby and Hemavan are world famous primarily thanks to legendary local skiers Ingemar Stenmark and Anja Pärson. Ammarnäs, Borgafjäll, Klimpfjäll and Nalovardo offer skiing for the whole family. In Kittelfjäll,a well-known mecca for all off-piste skiers, you can challenge your skills in ravines, forests or on Kalfjället or try heli-skiing.
In the interior there are many family friendly ski-slopes, for example Malå, Storklinta, Bygdsiljum and Agnäs. Board riders will enjoy Middagsberget outside Vännäs that, thanks to the towns Snowboard High School, offers an excellent half-pipe and several big jumps.
Cross-country skiing for all!
Many world champions and Olympic medal winners in cross-country skiing have their roots in Västerbotten. Not so strange when you consider that the county offers mile after mile of snow covered expanses and prepared trails.
In Västerbotten, cross-country skiing begins right outside the
door. Get out into the untouched terrain or follow the tracks out
into the wilderness and the magnificent winter landscape.
Test your strength on Kungsleden between Hemavan and Tärnaby or take the easier Drottningleden from Laisaliden till Hemavan. In Saxnäs you can get some extra training in at the Vasaloppet camp. The Hotel and tourist Office can help you with advice.
The Umeå district has many excellent trails. The illuminated trail at Nydalasjön is prepared with artificial snow and is open from early autumn until late spring. The trails at Gammlia are hillier and vary from 1.9 km up to 10 km. Bjurholm offers a combined 27 km of trails directly outside of the town of Nordmaling and is one of Västerbotten's most beautiful day trails.
